Beginning in the Stone Age, Neolithic herders descended into and occupied these vast tunnels, known as lava tubes, archaeologists have discovered. Umm Jirsan spans nearly 1 mile (1.5 kilometers), with passages that are up to 39 feet (12 meters) tall and as much as 148 feet (45 meters) wide. The researchers enter Umm Jirsan, the longest lava tube system in the region. BEIJING (AP) — China's Belt and Road Initiative looks to become smaller and greener after a decade of big projects that boosted trade but left big debts and raised environmental concerns. Called “One Belt, One Road” in Chinese, the Belt and Road Initiative started as a program for Chinese companies to build transportation, energy and other infrastructure overseas funded by Chinese development bank loans. China became a major financer of development projects under BRI, on par with the World Bank. Chinese development banks provided money for the BRI projects as loans, and some governments have been unable to pay them back. Now, having learned the hard way through defaults, China development banks are pulling back.

Russia's amassing $1 billion worth of Indian rupees each month that it's struggling to use. India has been buying Russian oil using rupees as Moscow has been shut out of the USD-denominated global payments system. And it's not like Russia can send the rupees back home either because India has restrictions over capital flows by foreign investors — the country is looking at $2 to $3 billion worth of rupees stuck in India every quarter. India and Russia are now trying to work out how Russia can use its mounting rupee stash. Another option under discussion is having Russia channel the rupees into Indian infrastructure projects in exchange for equity stakes, per the media outlet.

Researchers have been trying to make a strep-A vaccine for decadesIf it's caught in time, strep A can be treated with antibiotics. There is no vaccine commercially available, but several research groups are working on developing one. HOBART, Australia — About 230 whales have been stranded on Tasmania’s west coast, just days after 14 sperm whales were found beached on an island off the southeastern coast. Griffith University marine scientist Olaf Meynecke said it’s unusual for sperm whales to wash ashore. The department said it is not unusual for sperm whales to be sighted in Tasmania. The pilot whale is notorious for stranding in mass numbers, for reasons that are not entirely understood. Two years ago, about 470 long-finned pilot whales were found beached on sandbars off Tasmania’s west coast in the largest mass-stranding on record in Australia.

The world's earliest limb amputation — dating back 31,000 years — has been discovered in Borneo. It gives a fascinating insight into the medical abilities of people in the Stone Age. Studies on the skeleton buried in a cave found that, after the surgery, they went on to live for six to nine years. Previously, the earliest recorded amputation was carried out 7,000 years ago on a Neolithic farmer from France. They explained that intensive post-operative care of the patient, including temperature regulation, bathing, wound care, and disinfection, would have been vital for the patient.
